Ms Carolyn Liddy
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we settle into a new school term, it is exciting to see our wonderful community embrace the opportunities that have already commenced this term, including the Year 11 Soiree, the Year 12 Retreat, our modified Interhouse Cross Country competition, which was postponed at the end of last term and our first dance party for Term 2 last Friday. It is inspiring to watch our students embrace these events with their endless energy and enthusiasm.
We are all excited to welcome a change of season with our intense summer heat finally giving way to milder temperatures and some cooling breezes off the river. This change of season is particularly refreshing as it provides a renewed energy and focus for the new term. It’s a reminder of the cyclical nature of school life and the opportunities each new term brings with its own special activities as well as expectations of growth and learning.
As we embark on another wonderful season of learning, friendship and service, I am reminded of the words of Sister Joan Chittister, who said:
“Each moment is a new possibility, a new beginning, a new challenge. Don't let it slip by without seizing it."
ANZAC Day
This Thursday marks a solemn and important day in our national calendar as we pause to honour our Defence personnel, past and present, and express our gratitude to them for their selflessness and courage. In addition to being prepared to fight for their country, our Defence Forces often work on peacekeeping and providing urgent humanitarian aid, either in Australia or overseas. The freedoms and privileges we enjoy in Australia today have only been made possible through the service and compassion of so many.
This year, one of our AHSisters, Year 12 Gorry student Bronte Fleming (Y12 GO1), is the recipient of the 2024 Premier’s ANZAC Prize – one of only eight students in Queensland to receive this prestigious award. Bronte is currently on a two-week tour to visit important war memorial sites in the United Kingdom and on the Western Front in France and Belgium. We are also very honoured this year to have one of our dedicated staff members, Ms Walls, taking part in the tour as a supervising teacher.
Bronte and Ms Walls have recently visited the Belgian city of Ypres, where 5,533 Australian soldiers lost their lives in the Battle of Fromelles. Ms Walls has kindly sent through a few photos of their time in Ypres where they have toured the memorials and cemeteries in the Flanders region. A highlight of the tour was a visit to Talbot House in Poperinge, which was a place of respite for many of our soldiers during the war. Bronte put her piano skills to good use and played some songs for the tour group during lunch. We pray for Bronte and Ms Walls as they prepare for the solemn dawn service at Villers-Bretonneux.
Prayer for ANZAC Day
God of Mercy,
We remember and give thanks for the women and men who served in the Defence forces
and all who have given their lives in the service of our country.
Bless them for their service and help us to honour the freedoms that their sacrifices have secured.
Grant us the wisdom to learn from their spirit of resilience and comradeship.
As we seek to embody these virtues in our lives, guide us to be people of peace and respect for the dignity of all.
May we honour their memory not only through our words but through our actions in the service of others and our community.
We ask this in Your Holy Name,
Amen.
Parent-Student-Teacher Feedback Meetings
Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who have made appointments for our forthcoming Parent-Student-Teacher Feedback meetings. Bookings for these meetings are still open and will close this Friday, 26 April, at 10am. Please ensure you have completed your bookings before this cut-off period.
Our teaching staff has commenced preparations for these meetings, which provide a valuable opportunity to discuss your daughter’s academic progress and identify areas for development.
As the name suggests, we encourage students to attend these meetings with their parents and caregivers. This enables our students to receive feedback firsthand from their teachers and encourages them to take responsibility for their own learning engagement and growth, as well as their academic achievements.
Winter Sport
As cooler weather sets in, our students eagerly embrace the diverse opportunities offered in our Winter Sports program, including cross country, track and field, athletics, netball, hockey, rowing, touch football, tennis, fencing, and water polo.
While training sessions are focused on skill development and fostering an active lifestyle, engaging in our comprehensive sports program also helps develop character traits such as teamwork, camaraderie, and fair play. These are valuable life skills that will benefit our AHSisters both now and in the future, and we encourage all students to explore the wide range of sports available at All Hallows’.
I extend my gratitude to our dedicated staff and Parent Support Groups who contribute to the success of our AHS Winter Sports program. Whether assisting with Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association (CaSSSA) meets and fixtures, or ensuring the smooth management and operation of our club sports program, your service and enthusiasm are truly appreciated.
Performing Arts and Culture Program
Meanwhile, Term 2 shines a spotlight on our Performing Arts and Culture program.
Our talented students will have an opportunity to showcase their creativity and skills later in the term during Culture Week, the Instrumental Arts Festival, and our always-popular School Production, presented in conjunction with St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace. This year we are looking forward to a trip down the yellow brick road as we enjoy The Wiz. Forget the return of Wicked to Brisbane later this year; tickets to The Wiz will be in high demand!
Our next networking event organised by our Past Pupils’ Association promises to be particularly entertaining. All Hallows’ has a rich history in the performing arts, and I am very excited to hear firsthand from AHSisters who have successfully pursued a career in the Performing Arts at our Sisters in the Spotlight Career Networking Event, presented by our wonderful Past Pupils’ Association.
This is an outstanding opportunity to hear from inspirational AHSisters now enjoying a career in the performing arts and will explore topics such as career paths, education and training, and advice for aspiring artists.
We are blessed with a panel of guest speakers with a range of professional experiences, including Priscilla Jackman (Class of 1995), Genevieve Trace (Class of 2003), Sophie Perkins (Class of 2012), Sophie Bannister (Class of 2012), and Ada Lukin (Class of 2020). This informative panel discussion will be moderated by Katrina Riveros (Class of 1993), Head of Drama at Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
We thank our Past Pupils’ Liaison, Ms Maree Nugent, and all members of our passionate Past Pupils’ Association for their organisation of this inspirational event.
For our students whose interests lean toward health, allied care and medicine disciplines, stay tuned for information about our upcoming Sisters in Scrubs Career Networking Event occurring in Term 3.
May God bless you and your family in the week ahead.
Ms Carolyn Liddy (Deputy Principal).
