Mrs. Catherine O'Kane
Dear Parents and Caregivers
On Friday, we come together to celebrate All Hallows’ Mercy Day — a special occasion where we honour the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy (celebrated on 24 September) and join the global Mercy community in commemorating the charism of Catherine McAuley and the life and work of the Sisters of Mercy.
On 24 September 1827, Catherine McAuley opened the doors and blessed the Chapel at the House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin. Her steadfast faith and vision laid the foundation for the Mercy tradition, and Catherine’s spirit continues to inspire us today, nearly two centuries since she selflessly used her inheritance to provide shelter and education for women and children. May we be inspired to continue her legacy.
To celebrate Mercy Day 2024, Sr Mary Wickham rsm has written a new poem and I share one stanza for your reflection on the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy:
Mary of Nazareth sits with us,
we learn from her, all of us servants of the Gospel.
Mary of Nazareth sits with us, and if we listen, we will learn from her.
Whatever our moment of graced mercy this day,
the apparently large or the seemingly small,
may we own the paradoxical wonder of it,
trust the quiet subtlety of its power to transform,
rejoice in its secret, never fully known, Spirit-sent methods,
and hold firmly but humbly to its source- God, who is Mercy.
We look forward to welcoming many Sisters of Mercy as our special guests to Mass that begins this special day of celebration. At Mass, we also give thanks to Mother Vincent Whitty, all of the founding Sisters of the Brisbane Congregation and all Sisters who have led and worked at our school over the past 163 years.
Other highly anticipated events during the day are the Annual Picnic on the Terrace and one of the most anticipated events in our House system — our House Choir competition. Our AHSisters have been diligently rehearsing for weeks within their House groups, and the enthusiasm and dedication they have poured into their performances are truly commendable. This event showcases our school's remarkable talent and highlights the strong relationships, camaraderie, and leadership that develop within our House system.
Finding your Voice
Yesterday’s P&F Finding Your Voice was a truly inspiring event, offering our school community the chance to hear from some extraordinary women. We were privileged to have Queensland Chief Justice Helen Bowskill, Dr. Amy Illidge, and renowned facilitator Madonna King, who led a rich and insightful panel discussion. It was a pleasure to share the stage with Justice Bowskill and Dr. Illidge and to have the opportunity to share experiences and wisdom. The event provided valuable insights on finding and using one's voice to make a difference, reminding us that there are many opportunities and pathways to service and fulfilment. A special thank you to Mr. Matthew Ames, President of our Debating PSG, and our dedicated P&F, for organising this thought-provoking opportunity for reflection and learning.
End of term and holiday activities
As we reach the end of Term 3, it is timely to reflect on the progress we've made and the challenges we have overcome. Whether related to our learning and development, personal relationships, or dealing with life’s inevitable challenges, each of us has shown resilience in different ways. With exams and assessments completed for the term, let's appreciate the journey we've been on together and look forward to a well-deserved break and the opportunities that Term 4 will bring.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment to providing a holistic, Mercy education for our students throughout the term. Your continued efforts to go above and beyond, nurturing both academic and personal growth, are truly appreciated.
The upcoming holiday break has a range of exciting opportunities and events for our AHSisters to reflect and grow.
Our Cambodia Cultural Immersion will offer students and staff an enriching experience abroad, deepening their understanding of social justice issues and global cultures and forging new connections. My thanks to Sr Denise Coghlan, a Brisbane Sister of Mercy who is a past pupil and past staff member of All Hallows’ School, and her colleagues who will host the girls for part of this inspiring immersion experience. A special thank you to Mr. John Pembroke, Mr. Vince Wall, Ms. Jane Walker and Ms. Marie Vallely who have foregone time with their own families over the break to provide this transformational experience for our students.
For our Class of 2024, the Year 12 Study Hub provides time, structure and space to prepare for external exams. This dedicated time for focused study is invaluable as they approach this critical phase of their academic journey, and we thank Mr. Adamson (Dean of Teaching and Learning), Ms. Beckmann (Dean of Student Learning and Data) and Ms. Havers (Head of Years 11 and 12) and our Senior Study Group Assistants (SSGAs) for leading and supervising across the week of the Study Hub.
For all members of our school community, I hope that the two weeks of term break are a time for relaxation, moments with loved ones, and rejuvenation. We pray that all members of our community who are travelling return safely.
May God bless you and keep all members of our All Hallows’ School community safe these holidays.
Mrs. Catherine O’Kane (Principal).
