Dear Parents and Caregivers

It is hard to believe there are just a few short days left of our 2024 school year and that our students will soon be heading off to enjoy the festive celebrations and holiday adventures with their loved ones.

In partnership with you, we have guided your daughters through another wonderful year of learning across our wide range of programs.  It is my hope that every AHSister can look back with pride on her many achievements, successes, lessons and learnings, trials and tribulations, all of which helped shape her ability to Listen with Curiosity, Speak with Courage and Act with Integrity.

These many happy memories are a testament to the shared commitment of the families and staff who support our students to be their best and do their best. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey and for entrusting us with the privilege of shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

As we look forward to a well-earned break, let us celebrate all that we’ve achieved this year and look forward with hope and joy to the opportunities the new year will bring.

Whole School Project

One of the year’s highlights was our 2024 Whole School Project, Pathways of Possibility, which raised an impressive $50,000 to support the Romero Centre’s Gateway to Employment program. This contribution will enable employment readiness training for 25 recently arrived refugees in our community and is a testament to the power of collective action and our commitment to making a difference.

Celebrating the success of 'Pathways of Possibility'

At the Year 12 Final Assembly, we proudly announced the remarkable results of our whole school project, 'Pathways of Possibility'. This initiative raised funds for the Romero Centre, which provides essential services to refugees and asylum seekers, helping them acquire skills to find employment.

Initially, we projected that our fundraising efforts would support 17 individuals' access to the 'Gateways to Employment' program run by the Romero Centre. However, thanks to the incredible dedication and generosity of our school community, we exceeded all expectations. This year, we raised an astounding $50,000, which will enable 25 people to benefit from these vital services.

The funds were raised through various activities, including bake sales, sausage sizzles, raffles, dress-up days, and the Magnolia Markets. Additionally, we received generous donations from the P&F and the Past Pupils' Association.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the students, families, and staff for their enormous commitment to the 2024 whole school project, 'Pathways of Possibility'. Your efforts have significantly impacted the lives of many, and we couldn't be prouder of what we have achieved together.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. Let's continue to strive for excellence and make a difference in our community.

Commitment to Social Justice

On Saturday, November 16, All Hallows' School was presented with the Romero Centre's 'Organisation with a Heart Award' in recognition of our ongoing support for refugees and asylum seekers.

This award acknowledges our contributions to the Romero Centre over the years, including the donations of Kitty's Room Home Starter Kits, food donations for their pantry, and our larger fundraising initiatives through various whole school projects.

Particular mention was made of the school's collective efforts, which raised an impressive $50,000 for this year's project. 

This very special award is a testament to the power of a community to truly make a difference in the lives of many.

Yesterday the world marked the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women. In the 19th century, Catherine McAuley was working to shelter women from such violence and almost 200 years later, women are unfortunately still facing similar conditions in their lives. Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life.

The United Nations theme to mark this day in 2024 is #NoExcuse, and this Friday, we are asking staff and students to show solidarity with this movement against violence by wearing a white shirt with appropriate length shorts or skirts. Through this visual symbol, we hope to draw attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women to revitalize commitments, call for accountability and action from decision-makers.

This event will not raise money. We aim to raise awareness for ourselves and the wider community.

Luciana Josey (Y08 ME3)

As the school year comes to an end, so does the first year of All Hallows' Green Thumbs Mercy Action group, a gardening initiative that strives to follow the school's values and mission in its own green and leafy way. 

Green Thumbs provides produce for Mercy Cooking, ran a stall during Eco-Justice week (raising over $90 selling basil seeds), and celebrated the end of the year with a final cooking goodbye. 

This initiative is driven by three Year 8 students, teacher representative Ms. Godfrey, Middle School volunteers and the integral help of Mr. Rexworthy.

Green Thumb's mission addresses the need for Mercy Action within All Hallows' middle school community. It provides opportunities for Year 5 and 6 students to foster and pursue a love of gardening, Eco-Justice and agriculture. For the past year, Green Thumbs have met every Thursday or Tuesday at lunchtime to work, grow and share their produce. 

A sincere thank you to Harriet Grant (6.3), Eliza Davis (6.3), Eliza Penman (6.3), Alice Tait (6.1), Adelin Wong (6.1), Anthea Williams (6.1), Charlotte Conners (6.1), Mila Cavallucci (6.1), and Amelia Rush (6.1) for their enthusiasm, hard work, amazing personalities, and dedication throughout the year. 

Our final goodbye included our first early morning meeting outside the Potter Kitchen at 7am for a morning of cooking - and eating! - some of our produce this term. 

With bruschetta and salsa on the menu, our year sixers jumped at the opportunity with their ever-present enthusiasm and eagerness. They made light work of the cooking and swiftly moved on to the eating portion of our morning! 

But now, as we say goodbye, we would also like to thank all the people who, without them, Green Thumbs would not have been what it was this year.

Thank you to Ms. Godfrey, who has helped us all year round and without whom there would be no Green Thumbs. A big thank you to Mr. Rexworthy for the help, advice and guidance for our gardening. Thank you to Ms. Easton, who was very helpful in making Green Thumbs into a Mercy Action group this year and setting up its roots (pun intended)! 

Thank you to Ms. McErlean for her help in providing produce for Mercy Cooking and other Mercy Action initiatives. 

Thank you to Mr. Adamson and Ms. Malone for helping us organise, supervise, and cook for our final celebration. A final thank you to all the year sixers who have given up their lunchtimes this year to participate in Green Thumbs. This has truly been ‘2024 like never before’. 

One of our most popular Mercy Action activities is Eddie's Van. Students assist with the van twice a week and we now have the opportunity to extend that service into the holidays with parent supervision. If your family would like to help feed the many people experiencing homelessness over the summer break, please register using the new system being trialled by the staff at Terrace.

In continuation of our growing relationship with Commonkind, our Year 5 and 6 students had their own Christmas Appeal to assist. By facilitating age-appropriate community service activities for children, we provided benevolent relief to people and communities suffering from poverty, disadvantage, and distress. 

Commonkind works with our Year 6 students in our Inclusee Mercy Action Group, and they facilitated the Christmas packing sessions, during which our students made Christmas hampers and stationery packs.

Kitty's Room volunteers also packed donations from students in Years 7-12, which will be donated to Vinnies, the Romero Centre, and Murri Ministry.

Thank you to everyone in the community who generously gave their time and donated food to this appeal.

Christmas is a time of joy but also excess, impacting the environment. 

This year, let’s celebrate sustainably with these five tips: 

1. reduce food waste by planning meals and composting scraps 
2. choose eco-friendly decorations like reusable ornaments and LED lights 
3. avoid disposables by using cloth napkins and thrifted tableware 
4. give eco-conscious gifts such as experiences or homemade items
5. opt for sustainable Christmas trees, like live potted ones or recycled artificial trees. 

The Eco-Justice Group ran a very successful campaign this term to collect as many recyclable containers as possible in the Containers For Change House Challenge. This should be the precursor to continued sustainable practices this Christmas.

As families enjoy their festivities in the coming weeks, please save those bottles and cans and take them to a Containers For Change collection point around the city.

As the end of 2024 approaches, students face a unique set of challenges that can impact their social and emotional wellbeing. The conclusion of the school year, finalising assessments, and the anticipation of holidays can create a stressful environment for students. 

This period often sees an increase in anxiety as students strive to keep and maintain connections over the extended break. On top of this, exhaustion sets in, and tolerance levels diminish ever so slightly. This is a time for caution and a reminder to all that the words we speak are held and interpreted and can have a lasting effect on those around us.

One of the key social impacts during this time is the potential for strained relationships. The pressure to perform academically can lead to reduced social interactions, as students may prioritise study time over socialising. 

This can result in feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can further exacerbate stress and anxiety. Additionally, the end of term can bring about changes in social dynamics, as students prepare for transitions such as moving to a new grade and friendship issues, which can create uncertainty and affect their sense of belonging, particularly over the Christmas break.

Fostering a supportive and inclusive school and home environment is essential to supporting students during this challenging period. Take time to notice if your daughter’s mood has changed. Is she disengaging from you and others, or is she taking care of herself the way she normally would? Is she irritable and snappy? These are just a few indicators; each young person shows different signs.

The important part of recognising the signs is then how to support without trying to save but guide and assist in problem solving, being firm in regards to social media and how they interact on it. The Christmas break provides more time to engage with social media without the school routine. 

Some tips that may help:

1.    Take the time to listen and not judge. Their feelings are valid for them. You don’t need to provide a solution every time; sometimes, listening is enough. 
2.    Monitor their phone usage. Observe the apps they are using and the times they are accessing their phone.
3.    Monitor your daughter’s friendships and how they are engaging with them online. Is it healthy, is it kind? 
4.    Extended school holidays can be challenging for some students. Engaging with friends and socialising appropriately over the eight-week break is important. 
5.    It is necessary to put clear guardrails in place on phones and computers at home. School does this through our school network but when using data on phones and home Wi-Fi, it is under the controls you put in place. 
6.    Observe social media accounts and the appropriateness of the content they are posting. They are still learning and will make mistakes. The online world is permanent and is not private. As Rebecca Sparrow emphasised in a recent article, “Our kids don’t have the life experience to understand the consequences of what they are doing online.”
7.    Your daughter will have other social media accounts you may not access. Have open discussions around this and the implications.

Being a teenager is not easy, and with the added "here-to-stay technology/social media world," we need to come together to support, guide, and provide guardrails that set limits and allow for learning and understanding. Most importantly, face-to-face social interactions are at the core of schools and the wider outside world, which provides connection and belonging, providing opportunities for teens to disengage from their phones.

It’s Tiiiiime!

As we finish "2024 like Never Before" strongly, it’s that time of year when Mariah Carey is currently thawing, Christmas trees are being decorated, and Hugh Grant’s iconic dancing in Love Actually is becoming the forefront of our minds. (Well, at least for me, it is). 

The holidays are approaching soon – with them come some incredible things to look forward to. I’ve always found the ‘Australian Christmas’ to be a magical thing. There is beauty in beach days, pavlovas and perhaps even carol singers at your local Woolworths. For those spending Christmas in a colder climate, frosty mornings and fairy lights are just as enchanting.

I found it a little confronting on November 1st, to already see the Christmas joy and spirit alive in supermarkets and shops in the form of nutcrackers and marshmallow Santas. I’ve certainly seen busy shoppers crowding Queen St already. But I think that it’s also important to recognise that not all people’s Christmases look the same. For some, Christmas is a big family gathering. For others, it might be small and intimate. For some people in our local communities, it might be more challenging.  

This is where the true essence of the season comes into play – how we express care and love to those around us. 

Personally, I am a massive fan of Buzzfeed Quizzes, and one that has always intrigued me is that of “love languages.” The way that people express and receive love is personal, and different for everyone. Hugh Grant had tea and chocolate biscuits, and Keira Knightley had handwritten cards at her doorstep. 

While gift-giving is often seen as the hallmark of Christmas, I think it’s important to recognise that it is not the sole way to show love and appreciation for our family and friends. The holidays are also about connection and spending quality time with those whom we care about. Kindness and small acts of care towards those around us are gifts in themselves. 

No matter what Christmas looks like for you, it’s these little moments that mean the most. So, as we finish off an unforgettable 2024, have so much fun, stay safe, and be kind. Because if you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling that love, actually is all around.

Annalise O’Rourke and Kinnia Lam 5.2

This week, the Year 5 students took part in a meaningful project that helped us learn about renewable energy, global citizenship and energy poverty. With the support of Origin, one of Australia’s largest energy companies, we worked on an incredibly special initiative to help young people around the world who lack access to reliable lighting.

As part of the Solar Buddy program, we learnt that 789 million people live in extreme energy poverty. This means they don’t have access to electricity or clean energy sources, making simple tasks such as studying in the evening incredibly difficult. We also learnt that 4 million deaths are caused by indoor air pollution every year, often due to the use of dangerous kerosene lamps.

To bring light to those in need, we built Solar Buddy lights for young people in Papa New Guinea who struggle to do their homework in the dark. These lights are a safe alternative to kerosene lanterns, which can be harmful to health and eyesight. We watched a touching video about a girl in Ghana named Fortunate who faces this challenge every night, trying to complete her homework with limited light.

The Solar Buddy light we created has a variety of features to support young people in their education. It has a charge time of 8 hours, and once charged, it provides light for 8-16 hours. The Solar Buddy is also waterproof and has two settings: 50% light for reading or homework and 100% light for tasks like walking outside at night, which helps improve safety.

Through this project, we felt deeply sad to learn about the millions of people who live in extreme energy poverty, and we’re proud that, as a Year 5 cohort, we were able to contribute to the Solar Buddy initiative.

This experience taught us the power of renewable energy and the importance of being global citizens who can make a difference in the world.

Year 5 & 6 Mercy Action

In Weeks 7 and 8, the Year 5 and 6 cohorts dedicated two periods each to Mercy Action, spending a morning packing hampers, testing markers, and writing letters to support members of the Brisbane community facing hardships. 

The mission was a tremendous success. Years 5 and 6 assembled an impressive hamper weighing 630 kg and created 700 cards filled with uplifting messages. 

The Concert Hall buzzed with energy as students worked together, determined to make a difference in the lives of those in need. The morning was not only a meaningful way to live out the school’s values but also an opportunity to have fun and bond with friends. 

Leading up to the Mercy Action event, all students contributed food and drinks for the hampers, with each house focusing on specific meal items. Together, we packed hampers with snacks, tinned foods, and drinks to support families living in poverty. These hampers helped spread holiday cheer to those unable to afford a special Christmas meal. 

By testing and sorting markers, we provided essential school supplies for students across Brisbane who might otherwise start the school year without them.

To conclude the morning, we created cards with heartfelt messages, bringing happiness to individuals who may not experience the joy of Christmas over the summer. 

The morning was filled with happy chatter, laughter, and even singing along to a playlist. Through this initiative, we not only embodied the values of Catherine McAuley but also learned the importance of community support and teamwork.

The coming long holiday break is a fabulous opportunity to focus on student reading skills. Research shows that if recreational reading time is not maintained, then student literacy levels usually decline.

Parents are a significant support for maintaining student reading skills, especially over holiday periods and especially with increased competition from social media, streaming and internet distractions. Reading helps students develop reading stamina, focus and attention, as well as vocabulary and literacy skills.

These abilities are especially important as students reach their senior years of schooling. Reading is like sports training; the skills need to be developed over sustained time and not left until the senior years.
Reading also assists with wellbeing and sleep. It can be beneficial to use strategies such as phones and devices being placed elsewhere than a bedroom at sleep-time and reading of books in print-format only as a pre-bedtime routine. Social media and many internet sites have algorithms designed to trap users and their time and attention. Reading can be a much better option for well-being, especially at night-time, than scrolling on devices.

Reading can also be promoted by visits to libraries and bookshops. A social approach with discussions about books promotes reading. 

AHS has 2 ebook and audiobook platforms. Audiobooks are great for travelling and while doing other activities like walking the dog. Last Monday evening on 18 November, our Year 10 Drama students took centre stage in what can only be described as an unforgettable Performance Night. Friends, family, and staff were eager to see the culmination of months of hard work, creativity, and collaboration.

The night featured a diverse array of performances, showcasing the students' versatility and dedication to their craft. The evening opened with our students reprising their QT Scene Project, presented in the Bille Brown studio in July. This group performance was based on Flowers in Antarctica by Wendy Mocke, and responded to the impact of Colonialism and Climate Change, inspired by recent environmental events. 

Other highlights included a powerful example of Epic Theatre where an intense waiting for instructions from Godot was performed by students using Brechtian techniques to engage the audience critically and emotionally, tackling thought-provoking themes with skill and maturity. One group performed a hard-hitting piece on the impact of mental health on a young girl, masterfully blending narration, formation and direct eye contact to challenge their viewers’ perspectives in It’s Presence.

In contrast, the evening also had its lighter moments, with a joyous celebration of female friendships in Steel Magnolias and, finally, a wonderful comedic performance that had the audience in stitches. From witty physical comedy to perfectly timed punchlines, the students proved they could bring levity and laughter to the stage just as effectively as they could provoke reflection.

Drama teacher Ms. Patterson praised the students for their commitment and creativity:
"These performances are a testament to the hard work and imagination that the Year 10 Drama students have poured into their projects. They embraced every challenge, from tackling complex theatre styles to working collaboratively under tight deadlines. We’re so proud of what they’ve achieved."

Audience members echoed these sentiments, with many commenting on the impressive range and depth of the performances. 

One parent noted, "It’s amazing to see how confident and versatile these young actors are. Each performance felt fresh and unique."

Congratulations to all the Year 10 Drama students for delivering such a memorable night! Your talent and dedication promise an exciting future in the world of theatre and beyond.

Save the date! 

The 2025 Theatresports Training Day, including trials for the 4 school teams, is Sunday, February 9th, 2025. 

It includes a workshop for interested students in Years 7 – 12 from 10am -12 pm. 

Students in Years 8 – 12 will then stay on to audition/trial for a place in one of two Junior (Years 8/9) and 2 Senior (Years 10/11/12) teams.

Years 5 - 8 Clarinet, Saxophone and Oboe students

On Tuesday, 19th November, the Concert Hall came alive with the joy of Christmas at our studio concert, Reed-A-Rama Christmas. 

The Year 5 – 8 Clarinet, Saxophone and Oboe students, came together to present a delightful selection of Christmas carols and songs in solos, duets and small group items to an appreciative audience of family and friends. 

In a surprise for the audience members, they were not left out of the performances and were encouraged to join in the singing of some well-known carols. The concert concluded with all the young performers presenting a combined performance of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, much to the delight of the audience.

The students are to be congratulated on the joy they brought to their performances, the professional way they performed and their impeccable concert manners, showing respect to all other performers. 

We would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Reed-A-Rama Christmas.

Years 5 & 6

Our Novizio Choir, under the direction of Ms Kylie Los, performed for all Year 5 and 6 students and their teachers in AHS Chapel on Monday morning, November 18. 

A number of families also joined the audience who were thoroughly transported by beautiful voices and harmonies of these young singers. 

AHS Indoor Hockey players attended the Brisbane Blaze fixture at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday. They were treated to a thrilling match, with Brisbane securing a 5-3 victory over Adelaide. After the game, the AHS players had the opportunity to meet with two-time Hockeyroo Renee Taylor, along with Blaze stars Steph Kershaw, Casey Dolkens, and Dayle Dolkens. During their discussion, the players emphasized that mastering the basics of hockey is essential for a long and successful hockey career.

A big thank you to the 2025 Hockey Captains for organising the social event for current and incoming AHS hockey players and the Hockey PSG for providing tickets to students and organising the meet-and-greet with Blaze players post-match. 

Last week, AHS attended the Futsal National Championships after earning a qualifying spot at the State Futsal Championships earlier in the year. Congratulations to our students on their tournament and thank you to AHS Coach Ray Bentley on guiding the team throughout the tournament. 

Visit from Alice Williams

After a successful first half of the 2024/25 Water Polo Season, we celebrated by welcoming Olympian Alice Williams (Class of 2015), who coached the players through drills and participated in a Q&A session led by our 2025 Water Polo Captains, Hannah and Milly.

It was inspiring for the girls to hear Alice's strategies for managing stress and overcoming disappointment.

They also had the chance to learn about the Stingers' remarkable 2024 Olympic journey. A big thank you to the PSG for organising this fantastic event!

Water Polo Clinics

During the first two weeks of the school holidays, we will run Water Polo clinics for our junior and senior players. More information can be found on the school app.

This week marks the final week of training and games for the year. When students return on 28 January, training will recommence.

Registrations for the 2025 Netball Season are now open! 

Families must complete two registrations by 29 January 2025, as late registrations cannot be accepted. Only students with total fees paid will be eligible to trial and be placed in a team.

Please see the school app or the Netball Handbook for registration details and step-by-step instructions.

Trials will be held in February, and full availability is required for all registered players, unless discussed prior with the coordinators.

AHS Tennis celebrates a fantastic year, highlighted by outstanding success in both the Term 1 CaSSSA Tennis competition and the Term 4 Knowles Cup. 

AHS proudly claimed the Aggregate Cup in both tournaments—a remarkable achievement for our program! We’re looking forward to the 2025 season, with over 100 students already registered for the Term 1 competition. 

Our inaugural Tennis Come and Try program was a great success, supporting over 40 students per session and providing a wonderful introduction to the sport for new players. A heartfelt thank you to the PSG for funding this initiative and for supporting our program. We’re excited to see what the 2025 season will bring!
