Dear Parents and Caregivers 

Settling into the year looks different for every student and family, and it is wonderful to see so many smiling faces engaged in learning, making friends, and exploring new interests. 

Last Friday, we celebrated the achievements of our Class of 2023 at our Scholars’ Assembly. It was a joy celebrating with this remarkable cohort of young people who achieved, and in many instances exceeded, the personal goals they set for themselves. Their hard work, tenacity and commitment to our Mercy ethos is a shining example for their AHSisters. 

It was especially exciting to recognise our School’s Dux for 2023, Celeste Delforce, who achieved an ATAR of 99.95 and Maria McGann, who was our Proxime Accessit with an ATAR of 99.85.

Of course, the accomplishments of our Class of 2023 would not be possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated teaching staff, the students’ families, and our broader community. I know our returning scholars are very grateful for the sacrifice and love that has been instrumental in their success. 

Congratulations to all members of our Class of 2023 and thank you for returning to celebrate with us last week. We look forward to hearing updates from our past pupils in the years to come. Perhaps these students were in Michelle Obama’s mind when she said: “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish”.

In addition to celebrating our 2023 Scholars, we recognised our Iontach Award recipients. These students achieved an A result in all the subjects that they studied in Semester 2, 2023.  We congratulate these students on their outstanding results. The names of our Iontach recipients are listed below. I know that at All Hallows’ we are blessed to work with a multitude of students who work diligently on their studies throughout their years at school, and I am sure that you would join me in expressing how proud we are of each and every one of our students and their learning progress.

All Hallows’ prides itself on the multiple opportunities we provide our students to not only grow as a learner but also to grow through participation in a multitude of activities including Mercy Action, sporting and cultural programs, as well as retreats, camps, and year level days out and “House nights in”. 

By embracing these many opportunities and participating fully in available programs, we are pleased to see each student gain new skills, broaden their social networks and grow in confidence. 

Our sporting program is now well underway with cross country, turf and indoor hockey, swimming, water polo, tennis, and touch football in full swing. Meanwhile, preparations are being made for fencing, netball, and rowing via our dedicated Parent Support Groups. Any parents and caregivers who wish to participate are still most welcome to be involved. 

Students and staff are excitedly preparing for Year 7 Camp next week, where they will develop their skills and knowledge away from the traditional classroom environment, foster independence, and see new friendships develop. 

Meanwhile, our Class of 2024 will attend Year 12 Progress Interviews next week. These valuable interviews involve senior members of staff meeting with each Year 12 student to reflect on their 2023 results, help them establish clear goals for the year ahead, and develop a plan to achieve those ambitions.

Students come to these interviews extremely well-prepared and are so insightful regarding their strengths and challenges as learners. I know that my colleagues share my enthusiasm for these opportunities to meet individually with our senior students, and we are always so impressed by their engagement in this process.  

We thank all members of our dedicated staff for their commitment to the holistic education of our students and to our parents and caregivers for the supportive manner in which they partner with us to provide our students with these wonderful opportunities. 

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which marks the commencement of Lent in the Church calendar.

Each year, we commemorate this important day with House Liturgies and Rice Day. We extend our thanks to our Food Services Team and Social Justice Captains for their work to prepare the rice and raise awareness of justice-related issues throughout this season of prayer and reflection.

The beginning of Lent also sees the commencement of our weekly staff Lenten Prayer Group — an important annual event on our staff formation calendar. This group meet each Friday morning during Lent to pray, read scripture and reflect on the Lenten journey.

This Sunday is Random Acts of Kindness Day — a powerful reminder of the impact kindness can have within our AHS community and beyond. Engaging in acts of kindness, even if small and seemingly insignificant, spreads joy and helps cultivate empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others. 

We are so blessed to regularly witness or be the recipient of acts of kindness undertaken by our students, parents, caregivers, and team members, and I invite you to consider how you can brighten someone’s day with a Random Act of Kindness.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter - forty days of preparation. Lent means waiting - for the cross. This period of feasting (Shrove Tuesday) and fasting (Ash Wednesday and Fridays) is designed to allow us time to reflect on our blessings and relationship with God. It's a bit of a reality check to remind us that we are indeed blessed.

In his 2024 Lenten message, Pope Francis described Lent as a time to free oneself from slavery and take action to free others suffering from the multiple forms of slavery that afflict the world. By slavery, he is implying that it binds us to values and activities that take us away from a relationship with God - slavery to power, wealth, fame… The Pope’s Lenten message focused on God’s call to leave behind the bonds of slavery, with the title, “Through the Desert, God Leads us to Freedom”.

“Lent is a season of conversion, a time of freedom” during which Christians seek to rediscover God’s call and promise, he wrote. “It is time to act, and in Lent, to act also means to pause. To pause in prayer, in order to receive the word of God, to pause like the Samaritan in the presence of a wounded brother or sister.”

While Lent is a time for personal conversation, we are also called to seek a change in the world beyond ourselves. In recalling the Exodus of the Hebrew people from Egypt, we are reminded that our journey through the desert can be a season of grace – not an abstract journey, but a concrete path that involves seeing the world as it is and hearing the cries of our oppressed brothers and sisters. We should Listen with Curiosity, Speak with Courage, and Act with Integrity in order that we can bring about change.

We mark the beginning of the season of Lent this week with Ash Wednesday liturgies held in House groups as well as symbolic fasting through our Rice Day fundraiser. 

I wish you all every blessing this Lenten season.

Our Rice Day fundraiser will take place tomorrow to mark the start of Lent. In support of our brothers and sisters who rely on the assistance of volunteers at The Romero Centre, we will raise money through the sale of plain rice and water at the Café and tuckshop. 

This return to simplicity is a reminder of Jesus' time in the desert where he stopped to pray and reflect. 

Please note the following about Rice Day:

Café (6.30am – 2.00pm)

Café will be open from 6.30am, offering a small range of non-meat breakfast items; coffee will be available for students in Year 10 and above only before school. 

Hot/Cold Chocolate is unavailable all day.

No Sandwiches/Rolls, Lunch Meals, Cake/slices, or Snacks will be available at all throughout the day.

Café will not be open after school. 

Still water is the only drink that can be purchased during the day. 

Food Service/Tuckshop 

No Breakfast options. 

Open only for Morning Tea and Lunch to staff and students 

Only selling still water and plain white rice at both breaks for all staff and students 

Please note we will not be offering meat products on Fridays during Lent.

Now that our Year 7 students have had some time to settle in and familiarise themselves with the programs on offer at the school, parents are able to sign up their Year 7 daughters for participation in the Mercy Action program.

2024 Semester 1 Year 7 Mercy Action Student Preferences - MUST BE COMPLETED USING A PARENT/GUARDIAN LOGIN ID | AHS

Last week, a group of our Year 12 students joined with Year 11 and 12 students from Villanova College in a Twilight Retreat designed to explore respectful relationships in the Christian context. 

Facilitated by Br Damien Price, the Conversations of the Heart Program, aims to provide space for conversation about issues of consent, respect, racism, safe partying and identity.

We were blessed to have the voices of Past Pupils (Class of 2023) Ashton Taylor,  Mary Barrell and Una O'Brien, who shared their stories through witness statements. These stories opened up discussion and learning for our seniors, who worked in small groups to unpack a variety of issues. The afternoon concluded with a brief liturgy based on the masks we wear.

On Thursday, the participants became the organisers of a similar retreat experience to be offered to Year 9 students using a similar format. They met at Villanova College to plan the discussion topics and activities for the Year 9 Retreat. We look forward to seeing how the complete program unfolds in the coming days.

The All Hallows’ community extends its sympathy and support to Amelia Lukin (Y10 MC2) on the death of her paternal grandmother. Allegra Guardala (Y9 CO2) and Odessa Guardala (Y5) on the death of their maternal grandfather and Kate Bell (Y10 WH2) on the death of her maternal grandfather.

May God’s love comfort them and their families at this sad time.

This past week saw our Year 11 students register for their QCAA myQCE Student Portal. 

The portal gives senior students visibility of their Learning Account and other information related to their senior studies, such as their individual External Assessment timetable, as well as a platform for online learning and micro-credentials such as the Academic Integrity Course for Students. 

I ask that all Year 11 students please take the time to check their My Learning Account and their My Details to ensure that they are correct.

"Academic integrity refers to the practice of scholarship in a manner that reflects honesty and responsibility. As an educational institution grounded in Mercy values, All Hallows’ School is committed to developing young women who display independence, personal and community responsibility, resilience and integrity. Students, teachers and parents share a responsibility for contributing to this development by ensuring the work students produce is an accurate reflection of their ability and effort."

This is an excerpt from the All Hallows’ School Diary p33-34, accessible to all students and referred to regularly with students by teachers and leaders. 

Our school has strict guidelines regarding Breaches of Assessment Conditions and excellent support for teaching effective research and academic practices.

The following steps will help students to maintain academic integrity:

Forward planning: Understand the components of a task and how long each component might take to complete.

Time management: Implement a plan to achieve the assessment outcome, incorporating adjustments as needed.  Allow for unexpected events such as issues with technology or changes in personal circumstances.

Note-taking and summarising: Synthesise research and gather information into a new idea or into summary dot points.

Keep clear records: Record where information and ideas come from.  Will you be able to find this information again if you need to?

Referencing: Appropriately acknowledging the ideas, work or interpretation of other people or agents.

Choosing appropriate examples: Select appropriate quotes or examples to support an argument or communicate meaning.

Editing: Refine your own work in several stages and keep your improving versions.

Self-assess compliance with academic integrity guidelines before submitting responses.

Our students are addressed specifically about Academic Integrity in Term 1 of Year 11 and complete the QCAA Academic Integrity course within their QCAA Student Portal. 

It is anticipated that the mandatory completion of the QCAAA Academic Integrity course will be a legislated requirement by 2025, given the increasing use and rapid advances of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are already well prepared for this as we have required our Year 11 cohorts to complete this course annually since its inception.

Start like you mean to finish

The exciting first weeks of the year provide many opportunities for Parent Information Evenings and community connections and it has been delightful to speak with some many parents and students about our programs and our approaches over these weeks. We have also had many opportunities to speak with our cohorts of students and continuing to develop a sense of community as well as beneficial scholarly dispositions. 

Some takeaway messages that I wish to share with our Parents, Caregivers and Students are:

Maintain regular study patterns for each subject, starting today.

Care for your whole self: maintain a healthy diet and environment, and strive to keep a growth mindset and can-do attitude.

Maintain your sleep patterns.

Set goals: some examples of SMART goals may include reviewing the work from the week, making summary notes and capturing worked examples in a separate summary book, and completing 30-minute blocks of uninterrupted, solid work on a challenging subject each afternoon before beginning other homework or reviews.

Make a weekly list of follow-up questions to ask your peers, Student Study Group Assistant, tutor or class teacher.

Effective Note Taking:  The foundation to effective study is good note taking. This means, clear, multi-coloured, organised notes written in brief dot point form with headings, subheadings, and even little footnotes or brackets to provide extra clarity where required.

Keep perspective: We can often get overwhelmed with the wall of work in front of us. I used the analogy of "How do you build a brick wall?" Well you start with one brick (today), lay it as well as you can, and build the wall one brick at a time. Before long, you will have made a good portion and be able to see the results, and by the end of the course, you will have a wall - but only if you start now with a well-laid foundation.

Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase in the occurrence of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and had several cases of confirmed Influenza A within our School Community. 

Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: fever, sore throat, dry cough, headache, muscle/joint pain and tiredness/extreme exhaustion. 

As we know, these infections are highly contagious and spread easily from person to person.  To support your health and the health of our community, it is important that students stay at home when they are experiencing these symptoms and for the duration of their illness.    

AHS continues to follow Queensland Health advice.  In addition to the information we are very familiar with around practices to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following information is taken from their website about how we can all help to prevent the spread of Influenza:

You can reduce the risk of infection by getting vaccinated and practising good hand and respiratory hygiene to protect yourself and others. If you are experiencing flu symptoms, you should:

Stay home when you are sick (in general, you can be infectious for up to a week after the onset of symptoms)

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub

Wash your hands before touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

Use a tissue, or the inside of your arm, when you cough and sneeze

Throw tissues away immediately and wash your hands

Don't share items such as cigarettes, cups, lipstick, toys, or anything that has come into contact with the mouth or nose

Stay at least 1 metre away from people who have flu-like symptoms

Hi Everyone! 

This week, I thought I’d discuss podcasts and why they’ve taken the media world by storm recently.

Compared to TV or listening to the radio, podcasts are arguably becoming more popular nowadays as they fit into the modern lifestyle.  

In the 1980s, there was a form of media recorded by bloggers who shared their thoughts on specific topics called ‘audio blogging’. Once the internet came around, it became easier to share and download this kind of media, hence, the term “podcasting” was coined in 2004. Then, all of a sudden, it became that thing that everyone was listening to. 

I think podcasts have gained such a big audience as they cover niche topics so you can practically find anything you want depending on what you feel like listening to. Podcasts deep dive into topics like science, health & wellness, true crime, comedy, politics and much more.  

For example, a podcast that gained lots of attention and is currently the second most popular on Spotify in Australia is the ‘Huberman Lab’, a science-based podcast. Hosted by Andrew Huberman (Ph. D.) a neuroscientist and professor, discussing how our brain works with our body. For someone who might know nothing about neuroscience at all, they could become an expert in the science of stress in under an hour.  

But it is that podcasts are so easily accessible, which makes them stand out in the media world. Just like listening to music, going onto whatever app has your podcasts, you are met with an array of different topics to choose from. 

You can listen to it while on a walk, cleaning the house or while driving. Whether you feel like being educated on a highly intellectual topic or feel like just relaxing to a bit of gossip or comedy. 

So next time you feel like taking a break, or maybe you need to learn something but don’t have time to read or watch long videos, consider podcasts. Who knows, you might find you love them! 

And finally – a shoutout to our school podcast, ‘Hallow Hallow’ which is very entertaining and can be accessed on Moodle!

Lydia Patterson (Drama Teacher)

On Monday, 12th February, our Year 10 and Year 12 Drama students watched a performance of Dario Fo’s play “Accidental Death of an Anarchist” performed by the Grin and Tonic Theatre troupe.  

This play, which was hugely popular in Italy has been transformed by Grin and Tonic to be set in Brisbane during the 1980’s.  

Dealing with themes of truth and corruption, students really learnt that Drama and Art can change the world.

UQ Science Ambassador Program

Like Science?  As a UQ Science Ambassador, you will raise the profile of science at your school by championing science and delivering events, including National Science Week activities and encouraging other senior science students to share their experiences with students in all years. Year 11 Engineering, Design and Computing High School Ambassador Program

The Ambassador Program provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and raise the profile of engineering, design, or computing. You can develop your leadership abilities and communication skills. It will provide a chance for you to connect with like-minded students across Queensland and Northern NSW. You must be nominated by a teacher and demonstrate an interest in engineering, design, architecture or computing. Young ChangeMakers

Young ChangeMakers is a four-day experience that allows Year 11 students to immerse themselves in university life, connect with academics and industry and develop leadership and critical thinking skills. Although applications don't open until May, you can register your interest and receive program updates here.

One Monday afternoon per term, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, all students in Years 5 and 6 are welcome to attend a debating afternoon at AHS. 

This will be:

3:30-4:30 - Training Session on Debating

4:30-5:00 - 30 minutes of team preparation time on a topic

5:00-5:30 - 30 minutes to debate another AHS team, with time dedicated at the end for individual feedback.

This will be facilitated by a combination of QDU-accredited adjudicators, AHS external coaches, and the AHS Debating Coordinator and held in classrooms in Mary Place at All Hallows’.

Students will also receive access to a debating resource booklet that they can use to guide them on their 2-year debating journey and some interactive modules on Moodle.

2024 Registration | AHS 

The Music Ensembles workshop day was held on Saturday, February 3rd. 

The day started with a morning session of rehearsals, which involved the Junior Choir, Sr. Mary Oliver String Ensemble, Flute Ensemble 2, Brass Ensemble 2, and Percussion Ensemble 4. 

The afternoon rehearsals were for the Junior Chorale, Mezzo Choir, Sr. Mary Gerald String Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble 2, Clarinet Ensemble 2, Guitar Ensemble 2, and Percussion Ensemble 3. 

Most Performing Arts ensembles start rehearsals in Term 4, 2023 and welcomed a few new members at the beginning of 2024. However, the Mezzo Choir (Year 7) were getting to know each other for the first time. The day was spent learning music for performances this year. Thanks to all the ensemble directors for their time, energy and enthusiasm. 

Congratulations to Charlotte Trigg (Y9 MC5), Amelia Schipper (Y8 GO1), Grace Ramalinga (Y8 TI1) and Lucille Horton (Y9 ME5) for their selection into the 13-15 Football Composite District Team.

Congratulations to Mia Zara (Y10 TI5) for her selection in the 16-19 Football Composite District Team.

Thank you to those students who have been nominated to represent their respective sports.  There were over 300 nominations received. 

While we would like to send everyone to trials, we are restricted to 4-6 students per sport; if you are one of the few who have met the criteria, you will receive an email from the sports office with the necessary information and forms to complete and present at trials.
